Spend Wisely and Save Thousands

Funerals are obviously emotional times. There aren't too many of us that have a lot of experience overseeing funerals. With thousands of dollars involved in a funeral, emotions often clouds our spending judgement.

Leading Causes of Spending Too Much for a Funeral

  • There is also strict time constraints in the funeral process.
  • Numerous decisions must be made "on the fly".
  • Lack of experience in planning a funeral
  • High emotions
  • Family pressure... everyone wants something different
  • Out of town travelers: airfares, hotels, etc.

Tips to Save Money for a Funeral

  1. 1
Telephone two or three funeral homes to gather general pricing.
  2. 2
Go to the internet to see what items you can have shipped to the funeral home.
  3. 3
Memorial services do not have to be held at the funeral home. Many people hold a service at their own home.

What is the FTC "Funeral Rule"?

The Funeral Rule, enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), makes it possible for you to choose only those goods and services you want or need and to pay only for those you select, whether you are making arrangements when a death occurs or in advance.

FTC Funeral Rule rights include but are not limited to:

  • Review casket price list
  • Be given a list of all goods and services
  • May provide your own casket or urn
  • Decide if embalming is needed or not
  • Receive prices estimates over the telephone

What Are Cremation Expenses?

Estimates from The National Directors Association indicate a funeral with a cremation, on average, costs about $ 5,000 - $ 6,000. Cremations on the very low end it can be $ 1,000 - $3,000 and up to $8,000 depending on your selections.

What to do if you do not have $5,000 or $10,000 to pay for a funeral of a loved one.

Many people purchase a final expense policy to provide tax-free proceeds.

Funeral Plot

It is important to recognize that funeral homes and cemeteries are independent regarding expenses. On average, a grave plot costs between $1,000 - $4,000. Of course, prices will be higher in major cities like New York or Los Angeles.

Veterans are advised to contact the Veteran's Administration to find out the benefits they have earned.

A headstone stands upright on top of the grave. Headstones ranges in price from $2,000 - $ 5,000. However, prices of headstone can be much higher based on size and materials used.

There are retailers that specialize in headstones. It is a wise move to research to find the best rates.

Grave Marker

A grave marker typically lies flat on the ground. The average price of a grave marker is $1,000. Of course, prices vary depending on the type of stone used. Bronze materials is a popular selection.

You may purchase a grave marker from a retailer. This will generally save you money instead of buying directly from the cemetery or funeral home.

Why is there a special life insurance policy just for funeral expenses?

The attractiveness of a final expense policy is that insurance carriers offer very forgiving underwriting (do not need perfect health) for these types of policies.

In addition, the policy's death benefits are low, so the risk pool is spread out. This offers seniors critical, affordable, permanent life insurance to pay for their important final expense needs.

A key benefit of funeral expense policies is you may purchase a very low amount of insurance. Coverage generally ranges from $2,000 - $25,000.   We always suggest you select the amount of coverage you need based on your budget.

If you need more protection, you may purchase a policy from more then one carrier.

Most popular reasons to

purchase a funeral expense policy.

  • Most of us don't have $10,000 in cash lying around to pay for a funeral.
  • Definitely don't want to leave my kids with a large funeral bill.
  • Would be great to pay-off outstanding debts (credit cards, car, medical)
  • Would love to leave some money to my kids and/or grandchild (for college).
